Terrible accident. And doubtful the driver has much insurance. Everyone, please check with you insurance agent and ask if you have "uninsured/underinsured" motorist coverage. And, then ask if it will cover you if you are hit. Some policies have an exclusion for this coverage if the insured (you) are operating a vehicle with less than 4 wheels.

Troopers with the State Highway Patrol confirmed that Ronald Doolittle, II, 43, died on the scene. His son, Ronald Doolittle, III, is in critical-life threatening condition at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He sustained a serious head injury. Troopers said the driver of the car that hit the father and son is Thomas Grooms, 63. Troopers report that he has been charged with felony death by motor vehicle, felony driving while impaired, open container, possession of cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia, among other charges. He is being held on a $500,000 bond. The accident happened around 9 a.m. Sunday near Halyburton Memorial Parkway. River Road re-opened shortly after noon. Deputies say the driver of the car and the bicyclists were traveling south on River Road, when the car swerved into the bike lane, striking the father and son.
