There are too many issues to comment on here. Everyone needs to talk with
their respective agent. Remember that 15%-25% of all drivers are uninsured and
of the ones that are insured, roughly 25% have minimum limits - in NC that's
$30K each person / $60K each accident for bodily injury and $25K property
damage. These two classes of folks probably account for most of the accidents
that occur. It is a good idea to retain small property exposures and increase
deductibles and spend that money on higher liability and un/under limits. You
can do this with a combination of Homeowners, Personal Auto and Umbrella
Liability policies (Umbrellas extend your other liability limits, fill some
gaps and come in increments of $1 Million). Keep in mind though that most
Umbrella carriers do not extend coverage above un/underinsured motorist limits
on your PAP. Effective January, 2009 North Carolina requires same un/under
limits on your PAP that you have for BI/PD liability.

Nick, thanks for the insurance advice.
When you suggest 'some policies have an exclusion'
are you referring to the "uninsured/undersinsured' on our
AUTO policy? We as cyclists can have coverage via
our AUTO policies?

When I was just out of school I remember trying to save expenses in many
ways and one was having the minimum required on the 'un/under' portion
of my auto policy thinking 'it will never happen to me' syndrome. I'm not too
insurance smart but I think most agents suggest '$100/$300/$100' category.
Is this right you ins dudes out there? And then go for the umbrella policy to
pick up better coverage? What would be the most responsible coverage
for a road cyclist?

Since the 'white pickup truck' incident----- and your above suggestion---the
coverage tied to one's auto policy might be just as imp as one's health policy.
Or am I off base in my thinking?

Terrible accident. And doubtful the driver has much insurance.

Everyone, please check with you insurance agent and ask if you have
"uninsured/underinsured" motorist coverage. And, then ask if it will cover you
if you are hit. Some policies have an exclusion for this coverage if the
insured (you) are operating a vehicle with less than 4 wheels.

...sad. This is what I am most fearful of.
The driver who should not be on the road.
Evidently RRd has a designated bike lane also.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A car hit two bicyclists on River Road in New
Hanover County Sunday morning, killing one person and critically injuring the
other.

Troopers with the State Highway Patrol confirmed that Ronald Doolittle, II, 43,
died on the scene.

His son, Ronald Doolittle, III, is in critical-life threatening condition at
New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He sustained a serious head injury.

Troopers said the driver of the car that hit the father and son is Thomas
Grooms, 63.

Troopers report that he has been charged with felony death by motor vehicle,
felony driving while impaired, open container, possession of cocaine,
possession of drug paraphernalia, among other charges. He is being held on a
$500,000 bond.

The accident happened around 9 a.m. Sunday near Halyburton Memorial Parkway.
River Road re-opened shortly after noon.

Deputies say the driver of the car and the bicyclists were traveling south on
River Road, when the car swerved into the bike lane, striking the father and
son.

We will have a complete report tonight on WECT News at 6.
