I wanted to give a 'mega' thanks to "strange" Joe. With less than six minutes
to go before the start of the race yesterday, I was walking to the water.
While putting on my goggles, snap, the band breaks. Ok, don't panic, just go
get your spare pair. Run back to transition area and pick up my spare pair.
Begin walking back to swim area and begin adjusting the second pair and SNAP
goes the second pair. I was not prepared to loose two pair of goggles
yesterday. Well, long story short, Joe wades back from the water when he sees
I'm in distress and offers me up a sprare pair. With less than two and half
minutes before race time, Joe runs to the transition area and picks me up a
pair. I put them on with 15 seconds to spare and try to regain my composure.
Tough to do especially when I finally get in and the water is freezing. No
wetsuit. That won't happen again.

I also wanted to say thanks to lee eatmon and David wilhelm as both were very
instrumental in helping with advice leading up to the event.

And finally, I wanted to say thanks to Linda and Turbo Dan. Both were Bing
fans yesterday and I felt as if I had my very own little cheering section. Dan
passed me at mile 34 in the ride and although demoralizing in a way, it was
what I needed when I needed it.

Good event all around. Good distance as well.

Several swimmers/cyclists/runners of Wilson turned out for the triathlon events
in "little" Washington this weekend.

Turbo Dan, KP, and Jon Anderson did the 100 mile triathlon. This was a
grueling event made of up of a 2 mile swim, 88 mile bike, and a 10 mile run.
KP had an overall time of 7:11 and Turbo Dan's overall time was 7:07. And it's
no surprise to anyone who knows him that Jon Anderson was the first bike to
come in and finished 2nd OVERALL with a final time of 6:03. He's got Kona in
his sights!! This was a tough event and they all did AMAZING!! Road
conditions for the bike were bumpy enough to knock some dental work loose, and
the wind gave them a strong fight, and once they finished the first 44 mile
loop, they set off to do it AGAIN! I tried to take a picture of Turbo Dan
after the first loop but riding true to his name the picture was a blur as he
passed....and KP was all smiles as she got into the groove for the 10 mile run
:) 100 miles and 6-7+ hours of work....hard to get my mind wrapped around
those numbers....WOW!

DC, Chris Bolt, Joe Strange and Dave Wilhelm competed in the 50 mile event.
This was a 1 mile swim, 44 mile bike and 5 mile run. DC won his age group and
came in 5th overall with a total time of 3:05 and a bike average of 22.1 that
surprised even him! Even with technical difficulties (watch didn't start at
the swim, bike computer was screwed up) and some physical challenges (leg
cramps in his quads that were excruciating and had him hollering in T2 after
getting off the bike) -- and yet he still kept a blistering 7:14 pace on the 5
mile run. Simply awe inspiring and after that example of endurance I'll never
complain after a race again. Chris Bolt completed his first ever triathlon and
placed 5th in his age group!! Had an excellent swim (29 minutes flat) but
anyone who swims with the "Bolt" isn't surprised to hear that! His overall
time was 3:43 with an 18.4 average on the bike. Watch out! There's another
strong triathlete in Wilson! He may not have had much time to train for this
but Joe Strange showed up and got it done! Had a great swim time of 33:10 and
an overall time of 4:11. And the advice he gave me about mentally preparing
for the swim = priceless. This is why he's "the coach"! Dave Wilhelm placed
2nd in his age group with an overall time of 3:27. Bike average was 19.7 and
average pace on the run was 7:46! No wonder we had trouble keeping up with him
on the "beer run" last Monday! He was just getting warmed up!! I think we
should slow him down with beer BEFORE the run next time!

Dan Decker and I competed in the sprint triathlon this morning. This was a 750
meter swim, 13 mile bike and 3 mile run. Dan finished 2nd in his age group
with an overall time of about 1:15 (they don't have our final times posted
yet). Dan totally could have won it but the guy he was coasting along with
found his 5th gear coming down the home stretch and hauled out a sprint that
caught Dan by surprise and he just couldn't catch him! There's a reason why
Dan couldn't catch him....he did a TOUGH 20 mile mountain bike race yesterday!!
It was good to see Dan's brother compete with him this morning too. This was
my first open water swim and all I can say is I finished and I didn't drown in
the Pamlico River! I kept at the swim with a slow but steady pace and drank
more water from the Pamlico than I care to admit -- but I got through it.
Tried to make up some time on the bike and run, and ended up with an overall
time of about 1:35. Not bad and I had a BLAST!

Awesome way to spend a weekend -- weather was great and FS Series does a nice
job of organizing these events. I think all of us are competing in the Three
Little Pigs sprint triathlon in Smithfield next month. Would be great to see a
large group from Wilson!

Several are doing the Olympic length triathlon at Kerr Lake in a few weeks.
Good luck to them! And if anyone wants to do the swim or bike then we'll make
it a relay and I'll do the run! Swim is 1500 meters, bike is 24.8 miles and
run is a 10K. Let me know -- this is a really fun event, Kerr Lake is
gorgeous!! and if you've never done a triathlon it would be a good way to get a
taste and experience a great event...but be careful....you'll get hooked!!
