Complete newbie to cygwin

And not much better to linux.
Ok so I follow painfully the setup steps and lose connections several times so I ahve some 20 ftpsite folders sitting on my harddrive and I attempt to install from them only to find that bash gives me unknown directory errors and doesn't seem to know what commands like ls etc are.
So... ummm...
HELP :-)
