I get two different views of my server's "/home" directory depending on if I'm on the server or under cygwin on a client.
On the server, I see things like: drwsrwsrwt 2 lin users 14 Nov 24 2006 NT_Perflogs/ drwxr-s--- 2 root private 24 Jul 26 2006 archive/ drwsr-s--- 4 backup backup 94 May 14 13:53 backup/ drwxr-xr-x 4 lin devel 103 Jan 6 2007 bench/ drwxr-sr-x 3 lin devel 16 Jan 27 2007 cygwin/ drwxr-x--x 4 guest guest 176 May 6 2003 guest/ drwxr-x--- 115 lin lingrp 12288 Aug 16 16:08 lin/ drwxr-s--x 33 lin devel 4096 May 19 03:50 linux/ drwxr-x--- 5 mailtest nogroup 131 May 6 2003 mailtest/ drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 188 Jul 31 19:21 packages/ drwxr-s--- 4 root samba 36 Jul 28 2005 samba/ drwxr-s--x 20 lin wheel 4096 Jun 9 17:09 tools/ drwsrws--x 4 wwwrun wwwrun 29 Jul 20 2006 www/ but locally, I see: drwxr-x--- 1 lin Administrators 0 Nov 24 2006 NT_Perflogs/ drwxr-x--- 1 lin Administrators 0 Jul 26 2006 archive/ drwxr-x--- 1 lin Administrators 0 May 14 13:53 backup/ drwxr-x--- 1 lin Administrators 0 Jan 6 2007 bench/ drwxr-x--- 1 lin Administrators 0 Jan 27 2007 cygwin/ drwxr-x--- 1 lin Administrators 0 May 6 2003 guest/ drwxr-x--- 1 lin Administrators 0 Aug 16 16:08 lin/ drwxr-x--- 1 lin Administrators 0 May 19 03:50 linux/ drwxr-x--- 1 lin Administrators 0 May 6 2003 mailtest/ drwxr-x--- 1 lin Administrators 0 Jul 31 19:21 packages/ drwxr-x--- 1 lin Administrators 0 Aug 19 2006 projects/ drwxr-x--- 1 lin Administrators 0 Jul 28 2005 samba/ drwxr-x--- 1 lin Administrators 0 Feb 11 2006 src/ drwxr-x--- 1 lin Administrators 0 Jun 9 17:09 tools/ drwxr-x--- 1 lin Administrators 0 Jul 20 2006 www/ -------- So why such a difference? Shouldn't I see something other than my own user & group name? The permissions seems to function as seen from top(server) view: //server/home> ll backup ls: reading directory backup: Permission denied total 0 //server/home> ll guest ls: reading directory guest: Permission denied total 0 I "guess" the permissions, owners and groups I see on files on when on my client really aren't too reliable or am I missing something...?
