Caltrans In Court Regarding Flags On Overpasses (San Francisco, CA) -- CalTrans officials were in court in San Francisco Wednesday, arguing for the right to keep "Old Glory" flying on freeway overpasses. The case stems from an incident in Santa Cruz County in which two women were upset that CalTrans workers were taking down anti-war banners, but leaving American flags untouched. The women say it's a free speech issue, but CalTrans says it's a matter of safety, since flags are instantly recognizable and don't tend to cause problems with drivers, while other banners that have to be read lead drivers to take their eyes off the road. The Ninth Circuit Court of appeals has heard the arguments. It could be several weeks before it renders a decision. http://www.ocnow.com/news/content/shared-auto/metro_news/g/LosAngeles/1011-caltransin.html
