Edgar, Thank you so much for this. I had suspected that the implication was sexual – specifically homosexual, given the bathhouse scenario. There is a tenuous connection in that Moriz Stekel’s brother Wilhelm was a psychoanalyst (trained by Freud and Krafft-Ebing) who did significant research on homosexuality, including bathhouse culture, but this is a much stronger link. If this article ever sees the light of day, you will be gratefully acknowledged! Thanks again, Andrew Sent from Mail for Windows 10 From: Edgar Hauster Dear Andrew, The "Czernowitzer Tagblatt", January 23, 1906 edition, p. 2-3, reports on "The Trumpeter - Wallstein Affair": https://bit.ly/3rbZT5r Between the Municipal Councillors Trompeteur and Wallstein there was a bitter struggle. It was about corruption, insults and also, among other things, about whether the Turkish Bath in Czernowitz was a place of prostitution. Whether this is true or not, I don't know, in any case, it is clear from the aforementioned article that Adolf Wallstein was the landlord of the Turkish bath, but not of its tenant or operator. It is a pity that today we cannot check the accusations, in any case the Municipal Council backed Adolf Weinstein. Warmest wishes and enjoy the reading on "The Trumpeter - Wallstein Affair"! Mathis <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, February 1, 2021 03:59 Subject: [czernowitz-l] Adolf Wallstein, the bathhouse owner? Hi everyone, As you might remember, I’m researching the 1907 Reichsrat election campaign in Czernowitz. One of the candidates who ran against Benno Straucher in Czernowitz-East was Adolf Wallstein, a prominent journalist. One thing I’ve noticed in looking through the newspaper reports on the campaign is that Wallstein is frequently referred to in articles as a “Badhausbesitzer,” i.e., a bathhouse owner. I know that there were a couple of bathhouses in Czernowitz. Is it true that Wallstein owned one of them? I’d appreciate any help with this one. Thanks in advance. -Andrew ________________________________ ________________________________ This moderated discussion group is for information exchange on the subject of Czernowitz and Sadagora Jewish History and Genealogy.
