Czernowitzers... Today, 80 years ago, on December 13, 1944, “Die Stimme”, the monthly Newsletter for the Bukovinians, was published for the very first time. Let's take a journey into the past together to comprehend what moved our ancestors, their relatives and friends back then!
In an “APPEAL TO THE BUKOWINIANS who have been living for several years in the Land of Israel” by Elias weinstein we read: “The events in our former homeland have meant that a large number of friends and acquaintances from Czernowitz and other places in Romania have come to this country without means. The housing crisis in the country caused by the war and other circumstances has left many of them homeless. One can understand that people without shelter, despite all the confidence in the future possibilities in the country, are dominated by a feeling of despair. [...] Over the years, we Bukovinian Jews have helped fellow Jews without delay whenever they appealed to our Jewish hearts. We helped the fleeing victims of the pogrom in Kishinev organized under the Tsar, we helped our Polish friends who were seeking asylum in Czernowitz from certain murder by the Gestapo in the last few years, when we alone were suffering unspeakable hardship, and we helped in many, many other cases.” https://www.difmoe.eu/uuid/uuid:355eb27f-f31a-48a2-ae66-1556a1c75b12 Dr. Manfred Reifer founded the Chug Olej Bukovina [Association of Immigrants from Bukovina] and decided to publish “Die Stimme”. He entrusted with this task Elias Weinstein, the former editor of the renowned daily newspaper “Czernowitzer Morgenblatt”. I will try to let “Die Stmme” continue to resound in the future and invite you to follow me on this journey. Your comments are highly welcome!
