Czernowitzers...

Published between 1924-1940, the the Czernowitzer Deutsche Tagespost
[Czernowitz German Daily Post] was a staunchly nationalist-ethnic paper and
after 1933 a mouthpiece of the German Reich Ministry of Propaganda. Normally a
NO-GO, BUT: While the newspaper agitated against Czernowitz Jews and
marginalized them, it nevertheless recorded the WEDDINGS & DEATHS in the city
with Teutonic thoroughness.

ON THIS BASIS WE HAVE CREATED A DATABASE FOR THE YEARS 1936-1940, DISPLAYING
8,116 DEATHS AND 3,754 MARRIAGES:

WHY IS THE DATABASE SO SIGNIFICANT FOR THE INTERWAR PERIOD IN CZERNOWITZ?

• There is virtually no publicly available data for this period; the data at
FamilySearch ends in 1929 and the local archives have other priorities at the
moment.

• From 1930 onwards, the civil status data (births, marriages, deaths) in
Bukovina were no longer kept separately by denomination, but centrally at the
registry offices.

• From 1936-1940, the Czernowitzer Deutsche Tagespost published the marriages
and deaths almost daily according to the information from the Czernowitz
registry office.

• The reports often also contain addresses and professions, which are on
display in the respective newspaper editions and can be accessed via hyperlinks.

We wish you genealogical hits with the new resource and we'd like to invite you
to share your discoveries with us!
