Dear Shlomo,

Let's try together to uncover your family secret. The "Jubilee Edition
Commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the [Czernowitz] Temple, Chanukah 5698 /
November 28, 1937” is probably the most valuable source when it comes to
researching religious practice in Czernowitz:

This bilingual book (Romanian/German) is a unique bibliophilic rarity, as far
as I know there are no more than two copies in the world. My copy, by courtesy
of the National Library of Israel, was the very first book I put online in the
Czernowitz Book Corner:

On page 28 you will find the article “The Temple and its Preachers” by Dr.
Mayer Ebner. With the help of the transcription, you can use an online
translator if necessary.

Good luck with your research and warmest wishes!

Subject: Question

Dear Edgar and Cornell,

I wonder if you might help me with a family mystery:

A relative of mine was married for a time to the daughter of the chief rabbi of
Czernowitz. This was in the 1930’s. The couple went to Palestine but then got
divorced. The woman returned to Czernowitz and the man joined the Russian army
during WWII.

How might I find a list of the chief rabbis of Czernowitz during the period
1920-1940? I’d appreciate any suggestions you could provide.

Many thanks and all the best,

Shlomo Shyovitz
