Czernowitzers... A new edition of “Die Stimme”, the monthly Newsletter for the Bukovinians, was published on 21-MAR-1945. Let's take a journey into the past together to comprehend what moved our ancestors, their relatives and friends back then!
Even before the end of the Second World War, Bukovinian Jews stood helplessly in front of the ruins of their existence and “Die Stimme” reports: “A BUKOVINIAN FAMILY who returned to Czernowitz from Transnistria after losing their head complains of their suffering in a letter to their relatives in Tel-Aviv. Their detention and the persecution in Transnistria have put them in the most difficult situation physically, psychologically and economically. Originally from South Bukovina, they would like to return to their original hometown, a wish that is obviously difficult to realize under the given circumstances.” The start of the “Repatriations to North Bukovina and Bessarabia” and the “Repatriations from Siberia” are in the focus, and by the way we learn that Erwin Mark returned from Russia to Czernowitz. His father, Dr. Abraham Jakob Mark, the former Chief Rabbi of Czernowitz, was brutally murdered by SS units in July 1941. He entrusted with this task Elias Weinstein, the former editor of the renowned daily newspaper “Czernowitzer Morgenblatt”.
