Czernowitzers...

A new edition of “Die Stimme”, the monthly Newsletter for the Bukovinians, was
published on 13-MAY-1945. Let's take a journey into the past together to
comprehend what moved our ancestors, their relatives and friends back then!

It had been less than a week since the end of the Second World War, but the
Jews in Romania were already facing new and difficult challenges. „‚THE
MANTUIREA CEASED‘. The Zionist weekly “Mântuirea” [The Salvation], which was
published in Bucharest under the direction of Zissu, was shut down by order of
the Romanian Government. According to information from the local Hebrew press,
the Romanian authorities cited the pro-fascist stance of this paper as the
reason for this measure. A very strange pretext to deprive a Zionist organ of
the possibility of existence.”

The hopes of Romanian Jewry for democratic change and the attainment of full
civil rights faded when the Jewish Democratic Committee was founded as an
offshoot of the Romanian Communist Party. According to Abraham Leib Zissu
(1888-1956), one of the leaders of the Jewish Party of Romania, it was neither
democratic nor Jewish. The editor of “Mântuirea”, an avant-garde Romanian
writer, Zionist, political essayist, industrialist and philantropist, resisted
all communist assaults. The “Mântuirea” was published until 1948, but Zissu was
arrested in 1954 and sentenced to life imprisonment for alleged treason. He was
pardoned in 1956 and was able to emigrate to Israel - seriously ill and scarred
by the harsh imprisonment - where he died just a few weeks later on September
6, 1956. The funeral service was attended by Golda Meir, Yosef Sprinzak and
Nahum Goldmann, who also gave the funeral oration.

Dr. Manfred Reifer founded the Chug Olej Bukovina [Association of Immigrants
from Bukovina] and decided to publish “Die Stimme”. He entrusted with this task
Elias Weinstein, the former editor of the renowned daily newspaper
“Czernowitzer Morgenblatt”.

I will try to let “Die Stmme” continue to resound in the future and invite you
to follow me on this journey. Your comments are highly welcome!
