Czernowitzers... A new edition of “Die Stimme”, the monthly Newsletter for the Bukovinians, was published on 11-JUL-1945. Let's take a journey into the past together to comprehend what moved our ancestors, their relatives and friends back then!
„Die Stimme“ reports under the heading “THE SITUATION IN ROMANIA”, on the “People's Tribunals”: “The name of the Romanian war criminals is linked to the indelible suffering we suffered through the loss of our relatives and friends, which is why the course of this trial caused us so much tension. Calotescu, Marinescu, these two executioners mainly determined the fate of the Jews of Bukovina for three years. Or rather: the rest of the Bukovinian Jews. Because most of them were transported to Transnistria, where the notorious Alexianu led the extermination operations.” The “People's Tribunals” were organized along the lines of the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg. And how were the three war criminals particularly mentioned in the article sentenced? Major General Corneliu Calotescu (1889-1970), Governor General of Bukovina 1941-1943, was sentenced to death. His sentence was subsequently commuted to life imprisonment and he was pardoned in 1956. His chief of cabinet, Major Stere Marinescu (1897-?), was also sentenced to death. His sentence was also commuted to life imprisonment. He was still in prison in 1957, after which his trail disappears. Only Gheorghe Alexianu (1897-1946), Governor of Transnistria, paid for his crimes with his life. He was executed on 01.06.1946 and was one of the four war criminals - along with Ion Antonescu, Mihai Antonescu and Constantin Z. Vasiliu - against whom the death sentences were actually carried out. https://czernowitzbook.blogspot.com/2015/06/moarte-criminalilor-de-razboi-death-to.html https://www.difmoe.eu/uuid/uuid:2e49a3bd-d0de-4579-bb9b-e9d8a1767e08 Dr. Manfred Reifer founded the Chug Olej Bukovina [Association of Immigrants from Bukovina] and decided to publish “Die Stimme”. He entrusted with this task Dr. Elias Weinstein, the former editor of the renowned daily newspaper “Czernowitzer Morgenblatt”. I will try to let “Die Stmme” continue to resound in the future and invite you to follow me on this journey. Your comments are highly welcome!
