Yes, we are thrilled to read your post, Marion! How puzzles are solved in
such surprising ways. It’s a reminder of how important it is to be out there

This is really remarkable, Marion. How well we can learn from unlikely sources!

While Alfred Schneider is no longer a member of this list, both Irene and
Helene Silverblatt are still subscribed. I hope they will spot your message and
reach out.

Warmest Regards,

Bruce

Subject: [czernowitz-l] voices from the past

Dear all,

In May 2008, Alfred Schneider replied to an enquiry from Irene and Helene
Silverblatt, who were looking for the poet ‘Discipol Mihnea’, whose poem
‘Crepuscul’ Selma had translated into German.
Alfred Schneider wrote:
‘3. I cannot help with Discipol Mihnea. A cursory internet search was
unsuccessful. ‘Discipol’ is used in Romanian as the English “disciple” and
could have been a nom-de-plume.’
Habent sua fata libelli - because books have a life of their own, we now know
the answer:
In Argentina, a grandson is researching his Romanian grandfather, who was a poet
and lived in Czernowitz. He finds in a Russian! Wikipedia entry that a poem by
his grandfather has been translated into German and published in my biography on
‘Selma Merbaum. I haven't had time to finish to finish writing it’. The grandson
is delighted by this information and contacts me.
And he tells me about his grandfather, who became a famous poet: he was only
three years older than Selma, and his little book of poems ‘Preludiu’ was
published in Czernowitz in 1940.
Selma Merbaum apparently exchanged ideas with young contemporary poets! Discipol
Mihnea (pseudonym) - survived the Holocaust and became famous.
Paul Mihnea (born 22 July 1921, Briceni, Romania - died 31 August 1994,
Chisinau, Republic of Moldova) was a Moldovan poet and translator.
He was born in Briceni in 1921 into a Jewish family under the name Pincu Șilman.
He attended grammar school in Chernivtsi and wrote poetry while still at school.
His first book, Preludiu, was published in Chernivtsi in 1940 (Discipol Mihnea.
Preludiu. With a foreword by Mircea Streinul. Cernauți: Nord, 1940 - 60 pp.
Discipol means ‘apostle’, his grandson Kirill told me.
Isn't it marvellous that the voices from Czernowitz survive?
