Czernowitzers... A new edition of “Die Stimme”, the monthly Newsletter for the Bukovinians, was published on 24-FEB-1946. Let's take a journey into the past together to comprehend what moved our ancestors, their relatives and friends back then!
As early as May 1945, “Die Stimme” reported that the communist rulers in Romania had tried to bring the Romanian Jewry “into line”. In this issue we now read: „A special court for war crimes has been sitting in Bucharest for some time now. It is strange that it started with the Jewish Center. We are far from giving the members of this illustrious body a certificate of good conduct, but it must at least be described as curious that the main criminals remain in the background while their henchmen are put on trial.“ The study published by Yad Vashem on the “TRIALS OF THE WAR CRIMINALS” aptly states so correctly: „The most famous involved the leadership of the Antonescu-era Jewish Center (Centrala Evreilor), established on January 11, 1942, which had acted as a sort of Judenrat. Nandor Gingold, chairman of the Center and a converted Jew, received a life sentence to hard labor on February 18, 1946, while his associates Matias Grünberg (alias Willman), A. Grossman-Grozea, and Jack Leon were sentenced to between twelve and twenty years in prison. The country’s new communist rulers would eventually turn “Gingoldism” into a proxy for ‚fascism’ when referring to political adversaries within the Jewish community (not yet communized at that stage), although the term ‚Jewish fascism‘ was also often used. The remainder of this chapter will focus on the treatment of crimes against Jews in the postwar trials.“ https://www.yadvashem.org/yv/pdf-drupal/en/report/english/1.12-trials-of-war-criminals.pdf https://www.difmoe.eu/uuid/uuid:ee40dc72-b61f-4fa6-bec6-b9edd399244a Dr. Manfred Reifer founded the Chug Olej Bukovina [Association of Immigrants from Bukovina] and decided to publish “Die Stimme”. He entrusted with this task Dr. Elias Weinstein, the former editor of the renowned daily newspaper “Czernowitzer Morgenblatt”. I will try to let “Die Stimme” continue to resound in the future and invite you to follow me on this journey. Your comments are highly welcome!
