Dear Scott,

Thank you so much for your message and, yes, that is a fascinating video, very
meaningful and professionally shot, rightly included in the USHMM archives:
https://youtu.be/-A3LRP0GVCg

Your letter and the video motivate me to complete a project that I have been
putting off for years. In 2011, my friend and historian Liviu Cărare published
an article that describes the conditions in the Czernowitz ghetto like no other
and documents the life-saving work of Dr. Traian Popovici:

“The conclusions of the investigations Commission for “Research of the
irregularities made for the evacuation of the Jews from Cernăuţi” (1941)”

https://old.historica-cluj.ro/menu/Anuar2011.php?lang=en#carare

I had the article published in Romanian in the Yearbook Series Historica of the
“George Baritiu” Institute of History, Cluj-Napoca, translated into English at
the time - before there were good online translators - but I haven't had the
time to cross-check the translation and correct the numerous errors, especially
for the (Jewish) names, that are already contained in the original document.

Now, after your contribution, I will look at the original and the English
translation again and hopefully share them with you all soon. As you can see,
your message was inspiring, and certainly not only for me...!

Warmest wishes!

Edgar

POPOVICI

Dear Edgar,

Thank you so much for your tireless work on behalf of the CZ Discussion Group.
Because of you and others we know more about our ancestry than most Jews in
America. Coincidentally, my wife Ilana and my ancestors were both from
Czernowitz! Albert Einstein said that "A coincidence is G*d's way of remain
anonymous".
Ilana and I, and her sister and nephew, (a film maker) went to the Popovici
Plaque unveiling in 2009. I later interviewed Mimi at her home in America.
This short video (5 mins.) has been vetted, approved, and included among the
archive of the US Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC. If you haven't
seen it, please enjoy it now. https://youtu.be/-A3LRP0GVCg
With current events in a world raging with war and antisemitism it is more
relevant than ever. If it weren't for the courageous actions of Dr. Popovici,
neither my wife nor my children or grandchildren would have ever been born.
So, to publicize his deeds is very personal with me.

Thanks again for all that you do. Best regards - Scott Gordon

Dear Ilana,

Thank you so much for your feedback. You are referring to the obituary of Dr.
Traian Popovici, which can be found on pages 4-5 of “Die Stimme”. I have only
quoted a small paragraph from it as an appetizer, as I can't do more at this
point.

BUT, you can get a translation of this - and every other - article from "Die
Stimme" by taking a small detour:

1. This is the link to the newspaper edition:
https://www.difmoe.eu/uuid/uuid:41d6e602-ef65-436c-8675-7a2a55976063

2. These are the links to pages 4 and 5:

https://www.difmoe.eu/uuid/uuid:82e7b754-3996-4115-8d92-0c2574ff3a4b

3. At the top left there is a photo button (mountains). Click on it and
download the photos.

4. Google Translate is not only able to translate texts BUT ALSO photos. Upload
the photos to Google Translate and have them translated. The result is
amazingly good.

It sounds a little complicated at first, but it's not really and the results
are worth it. Check it out. Warmest wishes as always!

Hi Edgar,

Thanks again for these emails. Is there a translated version of this?

As I am here as well because of his heroic actions, I am most interested in
reading about this. My grandfather was friends with him as well but was
arrested in late 1944 and sent to Siberia having survived the Ghetto and so
many other life uprooting events.

Thanks,
Ilana

Czernowitzers...

A new edition of “Die Stimme”, the monthly Newsletter for the Bukovinians, was
published on 01-JUN-1946. Let's take a journey into the past together to
comprehend what moved our ancestors, their relatives and friends back then!

In an obituary of DR. TRAIAN POPOVICI, the former Mayor of Czernowitz, who went
down in history as the Righteous Among the Nations, we read about the hidden
activities in his law office: “This office was subsequently the refuge of the
political commission of the illegal Zionist Organization on days when serious
measures threatened our brothers and us. Here we made our secret plans aimed at
establishing a connection with Jerusalem, from here we made attempts to inform
the Red Cross and the Vatican about our situation, with the Catholic prelate
effectively assisting us. Here, together with Ing. Wronsky and Eisenberg, the
leading members of the Jewish-Polish Committee, we prepared the defence and
rescue of the refugees from neighbouring Poland who had been summoned before
the military court - the office of Dr. Trajan Popovici was our asylum in the
bitterest hours.”

Like thousands and thousands of other Jews from Czernowitz, my grandparents
Elias and Marjem Hauster survived the Holocaust thanks to the initiative of
Traian Popovici and several other courageous Romanian political leaders, such
as Minister Dr. Dori Popovici, Inspector General Mihai Paun and General Dumitru
Petruc. This is well documented, but the underground activities that took place
in Traian Popovici's law office were completely new and most interesting to me
and probably to many others.

Dr. Manfred Reifer founded the Chug Olej Bukovina [Association of Immigrants
from Bukovina] and decided to publish “Die Stimme”. He entrusted with this task
Dr. Elias Weinstein, the former editor of the renowned daily newspaper
“Czernowitzer Morgenblatt”.

I will try to let “Die Stimme” continue to resound in the future and invite you
to follow me on this journey. Your comments are highly welcome!
