Actually, I believe I misspelled Chernivtsi anyway! But thank you for the
correct usage (Czernowitz) because I have always thought it was just a variant.
Like my grandfather’s postcards from 1916, a lot of family correspondence wrote
Czernowitz using a CH instead of CZ, henceforth my oft confusion.

Hello,
In 1916 it was Czernowitz and not Chernivsti.
Sorry this bothers me as I was born there as it was always Czernowitz for us.

Hello All!

I tried to send this last week along with reference images, but the Cornell
system rejected said images. Some members received them privately, however.

Dear Group:

So I took a few moments today to see how Google Translator (in this case via my
iPhone using Google Lens) interpreted German script into English, among other
languages to/from. To my surprise it actually reads it quite well. To an even
greater surprise, handwritten script!

My test postcard was from my paternal grandfather (Ruven aka. Richard Bernhard)
who wrote from Chernivtsi to his sisters in New York in 1916, describing, in
part, how their brother, Berl, had been captured during the war with
whereabouts unknown. (He was later confirmed dead.) Google Lens kept shifting
between “Berh” and “Berl” but it did capture it correctly on the second pass.
It is also simpler than the stand-alone Google Translate app and can also
“Auto-detect” languages, which is extremely helpful. In my case, it seemed to
interpret some Yiddish wording as well.

This kind of AI gets my approval… assuming they — whoever they are — don’t
steal for nefarious purposes!

Jordan Bernhard
