Edgar,
Another insightful article.  I appreciate your taking so much time to find and
share these with our group.
There is power in pictures and in words, but the differences in various
readers' perspectives also plays a BIG role in how they are affected by those
pictures and words. That is clearly shown in this piece you have shared today.
Thanks,
Leah Snider

 Czernowitzers...
A new edition of “Die Stimme”, the monthly Newsletter for the Bukovinians, was
published on 01-AUG-1948. Let's take a journey into the past together to
comprehend what moved our ancestors, their relatives and friends back then!
Under the headline “ILLEGAL...”, Erna Horowitz reports on the lives of the
numerous Palestinian refugees, including many from Bukovina, who have been
stuck in British camps on Cyprus for years. In her opinion, it is not the
attempts by young people to escape from the camps that are illegal, but rather
the blockade imposed by the British authorities.
“[...] On August 14, it was two years since the British navy first intercepted
Jewish refugee ships off the Palestinian coast and brought them to Cyprus. What
right did they have to do that? What right does the British government have to
keep these unfortunates, who have languished long enough in concentration camps
in Europe, behind barbed wire? What right did it have to steal two years from
the lives of people who would have used them to build a new existence, free in
the land that belonged to them and united with their families? Thirteen
thousand are vegetating in the camps in Cyprus. [...]”

Dr. Manfred Reifer founded the Chug Olej Bukovina [Association of Immigrants
from Bukovina] and decided to publish “Die Stimme”. He entrusted with this task
Dr. Elias Weinstein, the former editor of the renowned daily newspaper
“Czernowitzer Morgenblatt”.
I will try to let “Die Stimme” continue to resound in the future and invite you
to follow me on this journey. Your comments are highly welcome!
