I love the stamps. They also made me think of my father and his brother who
were both avid, life long stamp collectors!
Thank you all for sharing your memories and photos, etc. It means a lot, and
always gives me a bit better feeling for influences in my father's early life.
Sincerely,Leah Snider

I would like to pass on to you the extremely interesting mail message from Irv
Osterer from Ottawa, Canada, and I can only agree with Irv that Jim Wald's post
yesterday with the fascinating links to “Kaiser Karl in Czernowitz 6 August
1917” is just terrific.

Subject: philatelic material

Through Jim Wald's terrific post this morning, I was also able to see the
Stamps, Coins, Medals from Bukovina which included Peter Elbau's postmark from
my grandfather's home town - STANESTIE and some material from TRANSNISTRIA.

It is an incredible collection of material. Few of my contemporaries know what
an incredible place Czernowirz was.

I do have some semi philatelic material from Bukowina that I can share with the
group. It comes from my great uncle's passport application, which was issued in
Czernowitz. I have the full documents, should they be useful. One is signed by
my Great Grandmother who perished in Bershad. The Romanians would not recognize
the marriage of my great grandparents (Schulmann) because they were married by
a Rabbi ... and would only issue passports to my grandfather and his brother in
my great grandmother's maiden name - OSTERER.

Please feel free to include it if it meets the criteria of the group.

Ellen Goldman's very interesting feedback that I received was definitely
intended for Irv and our Group.

Irv,
My grandfather, Abraham Stettner, was born in and grew up in Stanestie.  He was
born in 1885.
It’s my understanding that Stanestie was a tiny town.  My mother told me that
my grandmother, Anna Feller Stettner, who was from Sadagora, would tease my
grandfather when they argued by saying “What do YOU know, you’re from a dorf!

In case any other third-generation immigrants from Czernowitz had the same
question:

The Yiddish word dorf (דורף) means village.

It's borrowed directly from German, where "das Dorf" also means "village." It
refers to a small rural community, larger than a hamlet but smaller than a town.

   -
Plural: The plural form is derfer (דערפֿער).

   -
Example in a sentence: "Dos dorf iz sheyn." (דאָס דאָרף איז שיין) — "The
village is beautiful."

Thank you, Gemini!
