A new edition of “Die Stimme”, the monthly Newsletter for the Bukovinians, was published on 01-FEB-1949. Let's take a journey into the past together to comprehend what moved our ancestors, their relatives and friends back then! Full of emotion and pride at the new foundation of the State of Israel, the author, under the pseudonym Matit-Jahu, reports under the heading “ISRAEL DAY IN LONDON” on the inauguration of the Embassy of Israel in London on 31-JAN-1949. London and the United Kingdom became a new home for many Jews, including those from Bukovina: Today I attended the raising of the flag of the state, our state, Israel, here in London, the metropolis of the world. This took place on a bright, summery, warm winter's day - oh, what a wonderful omen! - in the new embassy of the new State of Israel in the beautiful Manchester Square, at 3 o'clock in the afternoon, with a very large attendance of London Jewry. [...] During this historic act, which lasted more than an hour, I walked around the whole square to look at the crowd, unknown to anyone, and I saw figures that reminded me very much of home: the Eastern Jewish face! Everyone spoke English, young and old. Here and there I also heard Yiddish and only a few could speak Hebrew. But I am told that there are a large number of Jews in London and throughout England who speak Hebrew very well. What is characteristic, however, is how all Jews, without exception, regardless of their country of origin, speak English - even among themselves.
