I like the idea of, The Martyr's Forest --- a living memorial to the dead. It
is also beneficial to the planet, and can be enjoyed by the people close by.
One can reflect while surrounded by the serenity of nature.
Thanks for sharing this fascinating piece of information. I had never heard of
it.
Sincerely,
Leah Snider

Czernowitzers...

A new edition of “Die Stimme”, the monthly Newsletter for the Bukovinians, was
published on 01-FEB-1951. Let's take a journey into the past together to
comprehend what moved our ancestors, their relatives and friends back then!

The idea for MARTYR’S FOREST, which meant planting trees in memory of each one
victim of the Holocaust, came about immediately after the end of World War II.
But it was only after the founding of the State of Israel that the process
gained momentum.

“Martyr’s Forest. A dignified ceremony took place on March 7 near Jerusalem,
where, in the presence of representatives of the government, the Sochnuth, the
rabbinate, and numerous new Olim, saplings were planted in memory of the
murdered Jews of Poland, Russia, Germany, Austria, Romania, Hungary,
Czechoslovakia, Greece, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Belgium, the Netherlands, France,
and Italy. This is where the Martyr’s Forest will be planted. At the suggestion
of Dr. Zwi Schärf, a forest will be planted on the grounds of Keren Kayemeth in
memory of the Bukovinians who perished in Transnistria and Siberia. A campaign
to this end is currently underway.”

Who knows whether the immigrants from Bukovina mentioned in the same issue of
“Die Stimme” also planted trees in Martyr's Forest in memory of their loved
ones shortly after their arrival to Israel?

“The following have immigrated: Simon Luwisch, Bernhard Friedwald, A. Löbel,
Hero Beral, Dr. Spasser, Körner, Jakob Reicher, Menasche Hass, Jakob Schwarz,
Mrs. Wolf, Miss Spielmann, S. Aronowicz, Z. Fränkel, the Katz family (Itzkany),
Dr. Jekeles (Radautz), M. and Hersch Bessler, Hermann Hübner, Benno Schmelzer,
Zloczower, Max Edelstein, Dawid Wagner (Suczawa), Neuberger (Suczawa), Moses
Tennenbaum, Ing. S. Lenobel, Abraham Heitner, Ruhm (Suczawa), Professor
Hundert, Taube Lerner, Pepi Held, David Gleicher, Schapira (Gurahumora), M.
Fuhrer (Suczawa), Miss Kissmann (Suczawa), printer Ebner, Jakob Weidenfeld
(lawyer, Suczawa), Sigi Kottlar (Suczawa), Miss Eichenbaum (Suczawa), and
others.”

Dr. Manfred Reifer founded the Chug Olej Bukovina [Association of Immigrants
from Bukovina] and decided to publish “Die Stimme”. He entrusted with this task
Dr. Elias Weinstein, the former editor of the renowned daily newspaper
“Czernowitzer Morgenblatt”.

I will try to let “Die Stimme” continue to resound in the future and invite you
to follow me on this journey. Your comments are highly welcome!
