Edgar,
Another interesting person, more life details. It was funny to see the term,
"confused head" used as a description. Today one often hears something similar,
"monkey brain" which could probably describe most folks at some point or
another, what with all the so-called multi-tasking and running around
constantly! We would al be better off if we slowed down and, "smelled the
roses" more often.
The other thing that caught my eye was the girls' boarding school that Diamant
started. Do you have any more knowledge/information about that? I wonder how
long it was around and how well attended it was, among other things.
Thanks again,
Leah Snider

Czernowitzers...

A new edition of “Die Stimme”, the monthly Newsletter for the Bukovinians, was
published on 01-OCT-1954. Let's take a journey into the past together to
comprehend what moved our ancestors, their relatives and friends back then!

In the October 1954 issue of “Die Stimme”, Heinrich Deligdisch started a series
of articles entitled “CZERNOWITZER PORTRAITS – TYPES IN THE SOCIAL LIFE OF
BUKOVINA”. Among the first Czernowitzers to be portrayed were Wilhelm Ippen,
Prof. Dr. Marcus Schaffer and Dr. Max Diamant. We know him from the March and
May 1950 issues of “Die Stimme” and as the editor of the unique work “Jüdische
Volkskunst” [Jewish Folk Art]. No wonder that Dr. Max Diamant was said –
somehow smilingly – to rave about "theatre, paintings, old gravestones and
cherry blossoms":

“Dr. Max Diamant came from another world. It is difficult to classify him in a
particular group. He himself always stood out from the crowd. He was active in
politics, social and cultural fields, but did not really belong anywhere. A
complicated artistic nature without a home. The poet Katzenelson once called a
famous Jewish writer the ‘confused head'. Of course, he wasn't referring to his
hair, but to his brain, which was always in turmoil. This description fits
Diamant, who remained an enthusiast until the end of his life. It was his fate
to be often misunderstood. A non-Jewish politician, former parliamentarian
Grigorovici, called him 'Toiwe, the musician'. ‘Why?’ I asked. And he said that
a novella by a Romanian writer tells the story of a Jewish grain merchant,
Towie, who was supposed to buy wheat at the fair. There he found a blind
musician and forgot the purpose of his journey, standing lost in the world in
front of the blind man, listening to his playing and singing. The grain was
sold out, and Towie came away empty-handed because he had listened to the
music. Did the non-Jew not have a better understanding of Diamant than all his
friends? All of Diamant's colleagues became wealthy, while he – the art lover –
raved about theatre, paintings, old gravestones and cherry blossoms ... It
would be wrong to believe that he did not also do practical work. He developed
a fruitful activity in the Ort Society. It should be emphasised that he founded
a girls' boarding school where girls from the provinces who attended the Ort
technical colleges could find accommodation and meals. He was versatile, but
the longing for beauty dominated all his actions. In the ‘Czernowitzer
Morgenblatt’, Diamant once drew the attention of day trippers to Cecina that
the cherry blossom season was approaching. The road to Cecina was lined with
cherry trees. People should therefore consciously enjoy the magnificent sight.
The note caused head-shaking in ‘serious’ circles."

Dr. Manfred Reifer founded the Chug Olej Bukovina [Association of Immigrants
from Bukovina] and decided to publish “Die Stimme”. He entrusted with this task
Dr. Elias Weinstein, the former editor of the renowned daily newspaper
“Czernowitzer Morgenblatt”.

I will try to let “Die Stimme” continue to resound in the future and invite you
to follow me on this journey. Your comments are highly welcome!
