Not long ago, I took you back to Sadagora in the mid-19th century with an
article from “Die Stimme.” Who would have guessed that Sadagora would become so
relevant again due to the tragic events of recent days, as we learned from our
fellow member Eli - thank you so much for that:

Subject: [czernowitz-l] A Snippet from "Die Stimme" [The Voice] in 1953: DR.
BENNO STRAUCHER - FROM THE ESTATE OF DR. MANFRED REIFER

Czernowitzers...

A new edition of “Die Stimme”, the monthly Newsletter for the Bukovinians, was
published on 01-JUL-1953. Let's take a journey into the past together to
comprehend what moved our ancestors, their relatives and friends back then!

“Die Stimme” is in financial difficulties. In the whole of 1952, instead of
twelve issues, only the May issue was published. It was not until fourteen
months later, in July 1953, that a new issue appeared, with the obituary of Dr.
Manfred Reifer (1888-1953) as its lead story. Dr. Manfred Reifer was the
co-founder of “Die Stimme”. The same issue also features from his estate a
portrait of Dr. Benno Straucher (1854-1940), who dominated Jewish political
representation in Bukovina for decades. It takes us back to Sadagora and
Czernowitz in the mid-19th century:

"Dr. Benno Straucher was born in Sadagora (Rohosna) in 1854 to poor Jewish
parents. His rise coincided with that of the Ruzin Hasidic tzaddik dynasty. As
small as this town, inhabited almost entirely by Jews, was, it was considered
the metropolis of tzaddikism in the eyes of the Russian, Galician and
Bukovinian Hasidim. The general veneration of the Ruziner was also reflected in
his outward appearance, the splendour of his court, the semi-Moorish palace
with its rich, flower-filled garden and the elegant equipages. It was a Jewish
royal seat in the middle of a ghetto whose walls had been built by the Jews
themselves. The small town of Sadagora was only a few kilometres away from the
provincial capital of Czernowitz. A different Jewish community, a different
world, a different Malkuth. The spirit of the Haskalah penetrated the Jewish
quarter of this metropolis, which could be described as a very large city in
comparison to Sadagora, populated by a mixed-language population, a city that
had already founded the first Jewish-German elementary school in the year of
Dr. Straucher's birth. The influence of the Enlightenment movement was clearly
noticeable.”

Dr. Manfred Reifer founded the Chug Olej Bukovina [Association of Immigrants
from Bukovina] and decided to publish “Die Stimme”. He entrusted with this task
Dr. Elias Weinstein, the former editor of the renowned daily newspaper
“Czernowitzer Morgenblatt”.

I will try to let “Die Stimme” continue to resound in the future and invite you
to follow me on this journey. Your comments are highly welcome!
