I don't know how well the package handling with apt-get or others is done. Did you get one package with "apt-get install python2.5" or did you get a bunch of python packages? I know that i often expected to get the needed things when in fact some things which are included in one package in other distributions where still missing under Ubuntu. This seems to be a general problem under Ubuntu, not necessarily a python only one.
