We write for the financial services industry and their data does *not* go
anywhere!
Not even the parking lot, much less the cloud. A "web app" for them just
means "in a browser" but being served from *their* rack inside *their*
walls. I am not including Gmail, Salesforce, etc. which are hugely
successful but really justify cloud basing on cost of ownership vs on-site
systems rather than functionality. These web solutions are great and we use
them. I actually feel sorry for firms with Exchange Servers in their walls
now but they can, at least, also make the mails and calendars available to
their user outside the walls also.

However rich the web GUI continues to get, there will be real desktop apps
doing heavy lifting for a long, long time to come. Then there will still be
long running "service" type apps for monitoring, scheduling and process
control, all painting to screens in very, very real-time. These will
probably never be tied to a server for their *screen *content as THAT server
may well be one of the things being monitored and controlled. Data content
over the wire, of course, but application availability over the wire... not
for some financial service and production control/monitoring apps. Not for
a long time. Our clients want screen refresh rates from a dozens
of different data feeds and *file system* events that you would not believe.

However, finally, it will not have to be on a windows desktop.
Watch out for the iPad model! We just released a small report viewer for
iPad for our customer-facing client's folks and it is simply a smash hit to
them. I don't know how much it just helps them justify an iPad or that they
really get our app but the results are impressive. An "iPad", because of
the screen and typing surface size, is SO much more than a smart phone in
usability and readability. Instant on, like the iPad, should not be
over-looked for future devices as well. You never have that "do I really
want to crank this thing up?" feeling with the iPad model. From idea, or
other's words in conversation, to typing in a few seconds; in very limited
space, is easily done by iPad and the devices that will chase it. I would
love for Dabo to run there one day but that's a Python issue as much as
anything. There'll be a big Driod plank soon, I'm sure.

This isn't rocket science; it's about money. That stuff that our clients
make so they can buy stuff from us! :)

This is all just IMO and not meant to be defended. I just have this
conversation all the time with the "all you need is a browser" gang so this
struck a nerve. We'll just have to see how Chrome OS stacks up against iPad
and laptops of various sizes. For now, from scoring my son's baseball games
to saving much paper on all the words I have to read to a decent RDC
terminal in an emergency to the Mrs. reading her email while we are driving
to the son't baseball games, the iPad has me blown away in convenience and
battery life. I'll stop now.
