A reflection on today's Scripture:

An evil age. Then -- and now!

Just as Jonah was the sign for the Ninevites, so the Son of man would be
a sign for the present age. These are hard words. What Jesus proclaims
is that He is a test for His age. A test many of us all too often fail.
We do not tend to hear His words and don sackcloth and ashes because we
have been caught up in the spirit of the world.

The difficult part of all of this is that it is often so hard to tell
when you have been caught up in the spirit of the world. When have you
given in when you should have stood fast? Seems like an easy question,
and sometimes it is. But many times those lines are hard to find and to
draw in the battle.

All we can do is pray and pay attention to Saint Paul when he tells us
"Stand fast, and do not be caught up again under the yoke of slavery."
(Gal.5:1) This is a clue. When we feel dragged down by what we are
doing, perhaps we need to see if it might not be one of those things we
have bought into, but which Jesus wants to free us from!
