Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Ephesians 2:12-22
Psalm 85:9-14
Luke 12:35-38
A reflection on today's Scripture:
The cosmic Christ draws all of creation to Himself. Everything in the
universe was affected by the Death-Resurrection of Jesus. Especially
was each living person, past and present, given a completely new
capacity for growth, harmony, and fullness of destiny. The Ephesians
were no exception, and St. Paul describes in glowing terms how their
alienation was brought into community, their emptiness filled with
Christ's friendship, and their isolation brought into the community of
faith. This community of faith is also the common basis for acceptance
as to a family.
When we are aware of the strength of this incredible bonding with so
many others, then we have the strength and the will and the patience
for "waiting." We spend half of our lives waiting for something or
someone. There is no waiting more important than the vigilance spent
on waiting for the Bridegroom. In the Near East, there were
interminable meetings, negotiations, and parties that preceeded the
wedding itself. No wonder Jesus used that parable to show what
patience is needed from us as we await His coming in grace now and in
glory at the end of our lives. His waiting on the wedding guests
reminds us of last Sunday's Gospel in which Jesus told us that He had
come, not to be served, but to serve. Christ is sheer gift--a gift we
can never deserve, but only thank God for. He is worth the waiting!
