A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
In today's first reading, Isaiah reminds us to call out to God in our
need, that He is always listening. God responds to us in many ways,
but not necessarily in ways that we might expect. In today's Gospel,
Saint Matthew makes a special point to show us that Jesus responded
with pity, deep within his heart. This is the lesson He passes on to
his disciples; to go out and find the lost sheep; to teach, heal,
cast out demons and ultimately lead them home.
Are there lost sheep among us today? Has the Church focused on
something thought to be more important than the mission Jesus gave
it? In this time of Advent, we solemnly prepare for the coming of
Christ. Let us consider that Jesus might come to us as the single mom
who is hurting and struggling, or as an alcoholic caught in sickness
and addiction, or perhaps as a bothersome person with whom we must
work. We must be open to the Holy Spirit to be able to see and
respond just like Jesus, with a heart of mercy no matter what the
cost.
Jesus, meek and humble of heart,
Teach me to forget myself,
So that I can love my brothers and sisters in need.
Amen.
