A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

He Who Is to Come

Are you the one we were expecting, or should we be looking elsewhere?

There's something almost comical in the question. Can you imagine
going up to someone to whom you have sent an invitation, and for whom
you have been waiting so long and saying, "Oh by the way, did you
have an invitation"? But this is exactly what they are doing.

And it isn't really surprising. The people of Israel (not being at
all different from the people of today) had a remarkable capacity for
ignoring the activity of God that was occurring right under their
noses. God sent Prophets, Judges, and Leaders of all sorts to call
His people to Holiness. They just didn't seem to get it.

Yesterday began the third week of advent--a time when we stop looking
forward to the predicted second coming, and we look back longingly
and reflectively to that first coming. And this passage is
particularly appropriate, as we ask Jesus in our own lives-- are you
the promised one?

Take some time this season to hear the answer--it will be a wonderful
refreshment to your faith and life itself for your soul.
