A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
How precious is the birth of a child, even more so when the parents
have had great difficulty in conceiving. In today's readings, Minoa's
wife is given a surprise gift from God in the conception of Samson.
She herself abstains from harmful foods in keeping with God's desire
that Samson lead an austere life. Later, of course, we know that
Samson will fall in grave sin before again becoming an instrument for
the destruction of God's enemies.
In the Gospel, we find that Zechariah and Elizabeth will also receive
a surprise in their advanced years -- the child, John, the new
Elijah, who will also suffer a tragic death. Like Jesus, whose birth
we are now preparing, God's plan must take into account the scheming
of those who resist the Truth.
Through joy and sorrow, pleasure and pain, we too must carry out
God's plan to be born in us, and so eventually fulfill the Kingdom.
In obedience and acceptance, let us cooperate with His desire to
bring His power into our weak flesh."
