A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
Today the Church celebrates the beginning of the story of the
Incarnation; that is, the Word of God, Jesus becoming flesh in the
immaculate womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It tells how the Old
Testament prophet Isaiah speaks of the virgin being with child and
giving Him the name Immanuel.
Then Luke's gospel recounts the amazing announcement to Mary by the
Angel Gabriel, that she has been chosen by God to be the mother of
His Son. It is something that our often quasi-sophisticated minds can
hardly imagine, nor can we relate to Mary's humble, yet candid,
inquiries about how something so extraordinary can happen.
Finally, the fact that Mary consented to freely participate in the
Divine plan for our salvation is all but unexplainable except that by
grace she was moved to say "Yes!" and all that it required.
As we draw closer to the sacred feast whereby the Word became Flesh
and deigned to dwell among us, let us pray that we too may have the
grace to let God's holy gift of Himself enter into our hearts and
into our world. May Mary's perfect "Yes!" find expression in our own
lives as we seek to make our hearts a resting place for the infant
Jesus.
O come,
Key of David,
opening the gates of God's eternal Kingdom,
free the prisoners of darkness!
