A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
Today the Church celebrates the feast of St. John, apostle and
evangelist. It may seem a little strange that just two days after the
Solemnity of Christmas that our attention has been turned away from
the crib in Bethlehem and the wondrous child who was born there. On
closer inspection, we see that today's feast is not a distraction
from the events and the child of that most Holy Night, but rather a
testimonial to them.
In the First Reading for today, John writes something that is very
important for us to know and comprehend. Namely, that Jesus was not
just the main character in a lovely story, but a real person, who
lived and walked and breathed in the very world that we do. John puts
it so beautifully: he says, that what he is talking about is what he
has seen with his own eyes, heard with his own ears and touched with
his own hands. He says, in effect, that with his human senses he has
known the Incarnate Son of God!
Moreover, John says the reason he is telling us these things is so
that we, by faith, may see and hear and touch what he has
experienced.
So, don't be sad thinking that we have left the miraculous manger
scene, instead, go back to it even more convinced that it is not just
the venue of a beautiful story, but the place where the Word became
flesh to dwell among us!
