A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

Do you remember the children's game, "Truth or Consequences"? You
either told the truth or paid the consequences. Our readings today
are all about Truth, being faithful to the Truth, speaking the Truth.
It is clear that the sacred writer is warning his hearers about
"antiChrists" who are misleading the faithful through false teaching
about Jesus. To deny that Jesus is one with the Father, is to deny
the Father also. What terrible consequences come from falsehood! To
us also the warning comes: if we stray from Christ and His teaching,
we can have no part of God or salvation! Abiding in Truth is a
serious matter, affecting our destiny. What can preserve us from
falsehood? Our anointing with the Spirit in Baptism and Confirmation,
and strengthened by Eucharist. In our anointing, we have confidence
of remaining in the Truth. In our daily prayer, we need to be
conscious of and grateful for the gift of being anointed in the Truth
of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
