A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
In today's Scripture, John reminds us that it was more than just
blood and water that testified who Jesus really was. It was the
Spirit of God Himself that gave witness to His only Son, Jesus
Christ. When Jesus came down to the Jordan River to be baptized by
John, the heavens opened and the Holy Spirit descended like a dove
and it was then that they heard God's voice.
Meditating on these scriptures one can see that God the Holy Spirit
is the source of spiritual life. A life of prayer must be inflamed
with the spirit. Our churches Liturgy's must be inflamed with the
power and presence of the Holy Spirit, because this is where we will
hear God's voice.
When we enter the Church through the sacrament of Baptism, we are
born again of water and The Spirit. We must never forget the grace
that is with us through this sacrament. Learning and praying with
formal prayers are fine and bring good discipline into our lives, but
we should also allow the Holy Spirit to manifest his presence within
this prayer, keeping our minds and hearts open to the promptings of
the grace-bestowing Holy Spirit.
Come, Holy Ghost,
Fill the hearts of thy faithful
with the fire of thy love.
