A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
The ears of our hearts are still ringing with incarnational mystery and
wondrous, dazzling visions of stars and dreams of what glory our weak
humanity is destined for ...and has even now! Jesus, suddenly a mature human
and divine Messiah, begins his mission with Baptism and thunderous approval
from the clouds. For our meditation today, we have the deeply philosophical
Psalm 8 with its Hamlet-like musings on the glory, the dignity, and the
authority of the human person. How can we not accept the wondrous mantle
thrown over our shoulders, when Jesus Himself has so lifted us up by His
birth in Bethlehem? The Gospel reminds us how fiercely the powers of
darkness will oppose us, thwart us, and curse our mission. Yes, Jesus'
mission is our mission -- to witness, to suffer, and so to come to glory
through the Truth, the Way, and the Life of Jesus. How misleading the name
of this new liturgical season: Ordinary Time! Rather, it is "Glorious Time!"
