A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
St. Paul, writing to the Hebrews, teaches that God's word is living
and effective: sharper than any two-edged sword. Have you ever cut
your finger accidentally with a sharp knife? It's the same with God's
word. There are no areas of uncertainty. It's just like your cut
finger. Period.
By the grace of God, we have help in heaven from Jesus - the One who
experienced all the realities of mortal life, including every
temptation that we could ever possibly feel. Jesus WANTS to help us
resist temptation. He wants us to enjoy the beauty of our present
world through the perfection of the Law, the word of God. We can live
this desire of our Creator in our obedience to the Law and in love of
oneself and of neighbor.
It starts with humility, acknowledging our failures, and progresses
in time to the perfect offering of ourselves to God. When Jesus was
on earth, He sought out common-folk sinners (see the story of Levi in
today's Gospel) who admitted their failings, as opposed to the
haughty scribes and Pharisees who considered themselves examples of
virtue and above reproach.
Now's the time to sign up for the program while we've still got the
opportunity! We will learn in Psalm 19 that the Law of the Lord is:
perfect...
refreshing...
trustworthy...
wise...
right...
clear...
enlightening...
true...
just...
And fear of the Lord is:
pure...
enduring...
forever!
