A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

We do not often think of the difficulties which the early Christians
experienced in persevering in the faith. There were so many forces
that brought pressures against "holding firm" -- their families, who
grieved for their insane adherence to a new religion, civil forces
which threatened imprisonment, torture, and death if they refused to
obey and worship the current Caesar, and their own scant
understanding of the implications that "Jesus is Lord."
How heroic those early martyrs really were!

Today we are aware of so many who have fallen away from their belief
in the truths of the Catholic faith. Do we pray for them as we ought?
Do we show our concern for the implications of their disbelief or
indifference? Prayer for them, and letting those with whom we are
personally acquainted know that we are praying for them, can be just
the occasion for them to re-think and re-commit. What do we do to
strengthen our own understanding of how to interact with those who
have not persevered? Perhaps you can encourage the Catholics in your
own parish. Try discussing this with your pastor if there are no
programs for evangelization currently in place. Above all, pray and
witness in charity and in truth."
