+1. I think the improvement is significant enough that it will get a lot of "good press" and alone would be incentive enough for many darcs projects to jump ahead to 2.3 from 2.1/2.2.
Also, you seem worried that it might break something, and there's no better test then getting the code enabled in a well-examined beta/rc schedule.
