I like this. The people who it's most likely to annoy are Unix experts who already know they have a working sendmail - ie, precisely the people who are most comfortable with editing configuration files.
Minor point: it's only worth trying "sendmail" if you've already discovered there's a sendmail command somewhere in the user's PATH. In which case, maybe display the full path to it?
