At the end of the this post : https://www.darktable.org/2019/05/New%20module-lut3d/ you will find some GMIC commands to compress luts. These commands generate a gmz file, the lut as file name (with only one lut inside).
In dt you use the gmz files as png or cube files (except that gmz files can contain several luts). Only different picture format. 3dl-files are a simple text format like cube-files.
