You don't have to compile and install darktable just to get an updated 
usermanual.

- check out the sources
- cd darktable (or whatever you called the directory)
- mkdir build-usermanual/
- cd build-usermanual/
- cmake ..
- make darktable-usermanual

That will give you the PDF with all the recent changes in 
doc/usermanual/darktable-usermanual.pdf (not inside build-usermanual!).

If it doesn't feel free to ask in IRC.
