Because all it does is to apply a more specific curve, if one exists did the camera (e.g. Nikon D7000 instead of the generic 'Nikon' or 'Nikon-like'). The only way I know to turn off the base-curve is to turn it off, save that as a module preset, and auto-apply the preset to all imported files.
