If you have a lot of image files, you might want to consider using symlinks for 
the files rather than actually copying them all... alternately, you could 
disable the creation of XMP files in the "test" version and use the same 
directory, but then you wouldn't be testing XMP-related stuff...

No, there's a --cachedir argument for that. Try 'man darktable' for more 
options. FWIW, I've never had an issue sharing the same cache between versions, 
but keep in mind that whatever the last thing you did with any version will 
affect the thumbnail, etc.

It's possible that you could just modify the paths in the packages rather than 
compiling yourself, but building yourself might not end up being much more 
effort, and might be more interesting. :)
