Hi,

With DT we are getting a great product for free because of the
fantastic effort of the developers. If someone wants to volunteer
their time to improve the data asset management side of DT then it
would replace the need of programs such as LR which is now a monthly
subscription. If I had the computer programming skills I might try and
do that, but since I don't I won't criticise the great work done by
DT's developers. DT is my preferred image processor and sometimes I
use other programs, both free and paid for, to do tasks DT is not as
good at. DT is an editing program first and foremost. DAM
capabilities would be great but I will be patient and see if anyone
comes up with a solution.
I think it's not the file manager tasks that are important: Moving,
renaming, deleting etc. are already there.
Batch renaming also works *on import* - perhaps this could be a missing
feature for some *after* files are already imported.
More important - at least for me - are the capabilities to *find* my
fotos again: tags and IPTC Metadata (I don't find it a good solution to
use another app to select some photos and print out a list to go back to
dt and find those images manually to export them for the purpose I need
them).
This is why I favour dt before some other RAW editing software.
This being said:
I am very happy with all those *big* improvements in Lighttable with
version 3.0.x in this respect - many thanks to the devs about that!!!
(Especially the new tab in selected image module for metadata
manipulatione (copy, delete, paste etc.)) is great - and also the new
tree view in the tagging module as well as the editing capabilities of
already assigned tags)
Again - thanks!!
I wonder if DT gets great DAM capabilities if the next issue will be
the lack of layers that sends photographers running to GIMP or PS. It
is unlikely one program can do everything so I will use multiple
programs and recognise the strengths of each.
I think this will never be the case. Opening a file from dt in gimp
needs to export to intermediary format, say: tif. This merges all
non-destructive edits to the pixels themselves.
After editing in gimp and handing back to dt the same thing happens.
Doing things like Lightroom and PS would mean dt and gimp would have to
use the same compatible basic engine ...
I do not know much about closed source but does anyone know about
transfer from LR to Affinity Photo e. g.
Would be something similar I presume
Again my thanks to the developers of DT, GIMP and RawTherapee.
Sometimes I dream of a world where RawTherapee and DT are merged in
one program called DarkTherapee. There are great features in both
programs but from the outside it seems synergy of these two
development teams would be so great.
This sounds a bit like Brian Lunduke's "Why Linux sucks" annual
presentations ... ;)

Seeing many posts asking for adding more and more file management
capabilities into Darktable, I'd like to suggest that we do not
divert attention away from the greatest strength, image editing.
I'd rather see the devs put more attention into what makes
Darktable a must-have, what it can do so well with manipulating
images.
