I am not doing a complex sort .... simply 'view all' + 'time'. This can
be seen when simply opening my entire Pictures folder (right from the
top) where all of my images are already in time sequence.

With the new version of Darktable, I believe they expanded the options
available in the light table's "sort by" combo box, so an existing
setting may have been disrupted.
Also, I believe the light table collections are always sorted by every
criterion in that list -- the one selected by the user is just given the
priority, but within the equivalence classes created by that one, the
others are still used. For example, when I am sorting by "time" and have
two images with the same timestamp, and apply a color label to one,
their order is switched in the light table.

I assume you mean in lighttable. Do you mean that the 'sort by' that
you have set is not being obeyed. I have found things defaulting to
sort by filename sometimes when I am sure I left it sort by time for
example.

Current git ... Manjaro/XFCE ...
I appear to have an ongoing problem with images being located out
of position/time sequence in my system. To try and solve the
situation I have fully re-installed all of my images in a fresh dt
update after flushing all traces of '.db' files. I then ran a
fresh cache update.
The problem still exists with images being totally misplaces at
random.
Ideas would be welcome
