preferences are stored in darktablerc and you must exit darktable, then
make changes to darktablerc, then reopen darktable for the changes to be
active.

I am on linux and using master.  I don't know what operating system or
version of dt you use, display may not be the same  and making assumptions
*only* leads to more confusion.
