AFAIK dispcalGUI comes with a desktop file in /etc/xdg/autostart, which
applies the vcgt and loads the profile to X (if it was installed
beforehand). This file should be used by majority of current DEs.

After profiling, you can "install" the profile directly from dispcalGUI.

IMHO the actual loading of the profile (both vcgt and to X) is done in
cooperation with colord and/or oyranos tools and hence if you use any of
those, it should work ok.

You can check whether the profile gets loaded by running:

$ xprop -root | grep ICC_PROFILE
if there is some output, the profile will be used by sw, which is able
to use "system profile" (darktable included).

The above does not check whether the vcgt was applied too (this is a
neccessary but not sufficient condition to get properly color managed
monitor), though you can assume so since today's loaders do that
automatically.

P.S. "System-wide" installation refers to setup of the profile outside
of the home directory so that also other users on the computer can use
it.
