Good morning, 

Are you using a very slow computer ?  I imported ca. 45000 pictures in 
darktable last week and it took less than 8 hours to import and index 
everything. I cannot be more precise as I started the import  before going to 
work, and it was finished when I came back home. This was done with an intel 
core 2 duo @ 3GHz with 2 Go of RAM. The pictures were on an E-SATA external 
hard drive. I did not copy the files while importing.
