34.000 images is probably a bit to do, but I feel that the use case is
not that special at all. Think of working on the same images on more
than one computer, some shared environment e.g. where probably several
computers have there own local cache-db but a centralized image storage.

I think this would be a very good idea. I'd +1 it. Even some command
line option would be nice. Dt could generate them upon access of the
film role in question, as you mention the cache will (hopefully ;) be to
small to keep all thumbs anyway.
BTW: in some post of this thread it was mentioned that one will loose
presets, as they're only stored in the db. In the use case in question
(basically it's a desaster recovery) this could be a bit annoying.
I'd add a +1 to the idea to store presets like sidecars as well. Dt now
knows how to import presets so it would IMHO be a pretty good idea to
write those files to disk once generated so one can reimport them if
needs be.
All this of course changes the original pure db design a bit in having
the db for fast access only, but I think there is nothing wrong with that.
