Hi,

I've had some time to sleep on this, and it's slowly been sinking in,
I think I understand what's happening and why there's a need for a
display profile (I will, however, maintain that it shouldn't change
the pixel values or the histogram... and I've noticed that GIMP does
the same, unfortunately).

I just had a closer look at the curves of my profile, and there's this
noticable upwards "bump" in the darker tone curves, which I assume is
the reason I'm seeing the "h-o-r-r-i-b-l-e results" in the darker
areas of my pictures (it does correspond to my experience).

Just playing with a .png file I generated with a gradient that goes
from dark to light, I could see the difference that it made switching
between sRGB and system display profile. sRGB looks smoother, nicer,
and the darkest area looks darker to my eye... so I'm taking it the
calibration wasn't able to properly measure the darker tones...

If my issues is fixable to an extent, I'd be happy to try it. Some
recommended pointers I can follow.

(and yeah, a better screen would, of course, be the better option.
I'm looking at shopping as soon as I feel my finances are good
enough. In the mean time, it is interesting to try to figure this out
;-))

Cheers,
Richard
